Snow Regrets

The cabin is called Snow Regrets... I'm too lazy to make-up clever post titles on my own apparently.

You ever feel the urge to escape to the snow encrusted backwoods where the preferred method of transportation is a snow mobile and cell coverage is scarcer than non-fried food at the country fair? Neither does my wife… But I sure do! So, when my uncle invited us to his cabin in the woods (no, his name’s not Tom… but good one) right in the heart of ski country, I bought Lori some new insulated hiking shoes and she was agreeable to go. Of course I packed my camera gear in hopes of grabbing some winter wonderland shots. In particular, I was hoping to take an HDR photo of the cabin at blue hour. The above shot is the result of that planning and I’m really happy with the result.

The drive out on Friday night started out fine, but after a quick half-way point emergency Cheez-it stop at Target, huge flakes of snow started to fall fast and thick. I did what anyone would do and volunteered to navigate . What this really means is that I volunteered to take distracting panorama iPhone pictures (with a flash even! Oh, the humanity!) and hit repeat after “The Circle of Life” was about to end on our roadtrip mix CD. The shot to the right is one of the more successful iPhonography attempts. Completely processed in the iPhone, it’s 6 images stitched together in Autostitch, and then treated in Camera +.

This weekend I also decided to take a different approach to photography. I decided that instead of carefully planning and setting up every shot, I would go completely Rambo and shoot everything. I shot street lights, the snow, my family, dogs (in the face no less!), I even shot my cute little cousins. It was really quite liberating. Of course, I couldn’t resist busting out my tripod for a few bracketed frames, but mostly it was run-and-gun take-no-prisoners… if you catch my meaning.

The rub came in post production and in composing this post since I had so many photos to choose from. I try to reserve this blog as a showcase for only my best or most interesting images, but I also have a lot images that are just plain fun from this weekend too. So, as not to waste space on the blog but also show you all my photos, I decided to make the video below (idea ruthlessly commandeered from Mike Matas). Mad props to Lori for standing still for like 15min while I took pictures and said crazy-talk like “make it look more like you’re walking.”
