The tall stone walls of the castle were built for defense. They are called musha-gaeshi in Japanese which means “warrior return” since the steep curve of the wall makes ascent extremely difficult. If any invading samurai did manage to start climbing the wall, the defenders in the castle used openings in the wall to bombard enemies with rocks, hot oil or sand, arrows, and sometimes even longs.
